PowerSet Joins forces with Microsoft

Hmmm.. PowerSet was what we hoped would one-up the great Google, someone who would break the monopoly, or atleast some one who would be “interesting”.

BUT they decided to “join forces” with Microsoft (which basically means got accquired for a few billion dollars). This reminds me of the time when Anakin decided to join forces with the sith, he got all the power, also he got to command millions of storm troopers. He thought he was doing it for love. All I wonder is that whether all that power is it worth it? is it worth it when you’re on the dark side? is it worth it when everybody hates you?

In the beginning it’s great…

Sitting alone people tend to think, so I thought.

People always want to own / posses what they love. Once they do achieve this “ownership” they then go ahead and proceed to mould/change it according to their own ideas. In the end of this process you realise, due to all the changes, that what you own is now not what you loved.

People find companies fascinating, like the business model, acquire them, re-structure them, fill them with “your” people, then add “existing” philosophies  and principles, lay-off the old people and then your back to square one.

You find a pretty girl, you like her, hit on her, ask her out, she says yes <assumption> she says yes </assumption>, then you go out - 2,3 months it’s all great, then you find problems in her, you try to change her, she changes, you find more problems, more changes, more problems, she doesn’t change, you break up.

You fall in love with something/someone for what the thing/person is, don’t change it, don’t change the very reason you fell in love.

Must Have Mac Apps

  1. Virtual Box : A very powerful virtualization software which allows you to create virtual machines on your mac and install any operating system you want, linux or windows *shudder*.
  2. Fugu : Fugu is a cool graphical interface to SFTP, FTP, SCP, etc. Neat way to move files onto and off servers without using terminal.
  3. Firefox : The best browser ever. It’s got it’s memory leaks and all, but the power lies in its add ons and plugins. Plus its open source.
  4. App Delete : I always wondered why apple never made a way to remove applications. But then I found App Delete, a great way to remove applications, its connected files, etc. and maintain all consistencies.
  5. iWatchTV : Interesting software which keeps track of your favourite TV shows, episodes, timings, etc. It also has plugins to fetch torrents for you.
  6. Neo Office : Open Source Microsoft Office replacement .
  7. Quicksilver : “A unified, extensible interface for working with applications, contacts, music, and other data.”
  8. Super Docker : Customize you Dock, start up screen, etc.
  9. Transmission : Neat and Lightweight Bit Torrent Client.
  10. VLC player : Play-it-all  Media Player.

Crawl the Web, Rule the World

Every blogger makes a statement which he hopes he will be quoted on the web for. This is my statement :)

” Crawl the Web, Rule the World”

- Vikram Ghotgalkar

Imagine if your company, or maybe you as an individual could track anyone anywhere in the world and knew what he wanted, what he does and what he’s planning to do. If you have a google account, Google probably knows about all of this about you.

People now spend so much time online, they “hang out” on social networking sites, which actually have a lot of information about you. They know where you live, who are your friends, who are your loved ones, who you’re hitting on and probably all the gossip floating around about you. Professional Networking sites know about your professional experience, etc.

A lot of us blog, talking about stuff that is personal to us, ours thoughts, our views, your likes, your likes, dislikes, love, hate all of that. It’s all there on the net. It just needs to be crawled and linked to you.

Job Sites have your resumes, the know you’re looking for a job (risky in some organizations), they even have all your exact up to date address and contact details.

People tag each other’s homes, offices, colleges, even hang outs on Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, etc. Your GPS co-ordinates are even on the web. I know people who tagged 200-250 of their favorite hangouts on Google Maps, I think it’s stupid, but people do it.

It’s all there on the net, what you like to eat, the name of your dog/cat, who you are most attached to you, how much you get paid, your favorite songs, your saturday night plan and the basics, where you live, work, phone number, etc. It’s all in some database on some web server somewhere.

Imagine you knew all this information about everybody. You’d be pretty powerful. You’d probably have more information about people than most government organizations in the world. Think about it.

SUN buys MySQL !!

MySQL logo

It’s sad but true. In an announcement Sun said that they bought MySQL ( for $1 billion ). Already rumors have started that they might code it in JAVA and stuff. I think all we can do is wait and hope, hope that SUN doesn’t screw it up.

Brand New Groove

Junkyard GrooveWent for Shark Tooth Live Storms today, a rock concert at St. Andrew’s College. There were some good bands that played. One that of exceptionally great bands - that’s why i’m blogging about them - that performed were Chennai based Junkyard Groove. Not only did they play some really awesome music, but they also are great on stage. They’re like one of those must-go-and-watch-perform-live bands. They said that they are coming out with an album some time early next year<reminder to=”self”>must pick it up</reminder>They’ve opened for bands like Incubus, Iron Maiden and are playing with/opening for Megadeth, Machine Head.
